Introduction and overview
This module introduces the theory of wave motion at the surface of an
constant density, incompressible, fluid. Topics to be covered include
- Linear water waves: normal modes, dispersion relation, phase velocity, group velocity.
- Initial value problem: method of stationary phase.
- Shoaling waves and wave refraction: slowly varying bottom topography, ray theory,
Snell's Law
- Conservation of wave action: applied to shoaling waves, Green's Law, connection with
energy.
- Weakly nonlinear water waves: change in frequency and speed due to amplitude,
Stokes waves, model equations.
- Model equations for weakly nonlinear waves: nonlinear Schrodinger equation,
Korteweg-DeVries equation
